The Last Supper: Its Significance, Origins, and Life-Changing Impact

Communion (the Lord’s Last Supper) photo by Pavel Danilyuk

Two weeks ago, we had the Lord’s Last Supper – communion during our gathering. The Lord’s Last Supper, as found in the Gospels (Matthew 26:26-30, Mark 14:22-26, Luke 22:14-20, John 13:1-17), was the last meal Jesus had with His disciples before being nailed to the cross. The significance of this meal must always be kept in mind for different reasons but remembrance is KEY.

“Do this in remembrance of me.”

First, it was the last meal Jesus had, the last cup he drank before the cross and yes because it is the commandment for all believers to keep it to heart and yes, practice it as much as they gather.

Jesus during the Last Supper

In the Bible, Jesus stressed how the bread was his body and the wine, the cup, the cup of His blood. Focusing critically on the cup, the blood that was about to be poured out for the salvation of many covering all the blood that all the animals shed, or could ever shed for the sins of man (Matthew 26:27-28). Remember, the commandant and direction of God, in the book of (Leviticus 4:27-31), the sacrifice and the burnt offering for the sins first of the priests then of all other people (Leviticus 16:6). Well, from the sacrifice of Christ, which was offered once and for all (Hebrews 10:10), allows us to approach the mercy seat because Christ is the sacrifice it took for us to obtain grace, and favour and be restored to be God’s own again (Hebrews 4:16).

We can not do anything on our own before God the might, except, when we are in Christ (John 15:5). We are no longer our own but the LORD who saved us and brought us to be able to stand as sons again to God, Him being the firstborn from dead (Colossians 1:18). Living forever. The priest forever (Hebrews 7:24-25), thus no other sacrifice, no animal offering will do, nor ought to be made, than believing in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ our Lord in God (Hebrews 10:14).

Back to the Lord’s Supper

It is almost 18 years now I have been partaking in the Lord’s Supper. I was 12 years old then. But it was last week when I was made aware of something we are never taught in many of the churches or gatherings we attend. It brought me to ask this question; What were you told about the Lord’s supper? Well, was it a commandment? Yes. Was it an order? Yes. A reminder for believers? Yes. But there is something more. It is powerful. Very. Yes. And if you partake of it, you bring judgment upon yourself, as 1 (Corinthians 11:27-29) warns about partaking the supper unworthily.

Do you know why Christ did what he did? Why the Last Supper? Why Jesus to the disciples? And yes, why the first Church considered it great. They broke the bread and shared the cup intensely and yes for as much as they could (Acts 2:42). Because it was the Last Supper.

The Meaning of the Last Supper

See the Lord’s Supper as explained to me recently, what made me in awe and yes, in tears was this.

The Lord Supper, the Cup, Until I sit with you in my Father’s House, I go to prepare you a home is how Jews proposed marriage.

See, a young man when ready to settle, he made a journey to the woman’s house, and yes, after sharing a drink, a promise with the lady, he said those words, Until I meet you again in my father’s house.

The young man then returned home to his father, and yes, built his own house beside his father’s house. And after many days, months and yes, as long as it took. The father, as He seems to it the house is for the son and the bride, he allowed the son to go bring the bride who was in waiting. Unannounced. Just like in the story of Samson and the bride who was given to the other man. The Word and the drink were the promise. The house is built. The wife is brought to the house.

Guess, this was why Smason did what he did enraged. His word, covenant and contract were not honoured. For the bride ought to wait.

What a beautiful Proposal

  • In my father’s house, there are many houses, if it weren’t so, I would have told you… I am going to prepare you a place to live. So that where I am, you also should be there.

How about that for a marriage proposal? Jesus as the groom, the Church as the bride. Now you understand or should understand why the Revelation speaks of the wedding between the Lamb and the Church.

The good thing is, Jesus didn’t leave us with just the promise. He left us with the Helper, Power, Teacher and more. The Holy Spirit, Who is He to you? It is like a royal marriage proposal, the bride has received not only the promise but also the power and access to anything related to the next kingdom and in this love story, the Kingdom of God is the most and top and yes, The ALL. That means, as a ring of authority kings could give their sons, tiaras to daughters or entourages to queens, and the Holy Spirit is even more. We have not been left empty, alone or even nothing. The Lord of Hosts is with us.

Understand the Power

We have been crowned with power, authority, love, and wonder, whatever the King and LORD can do, He has set and enthroned, given us to act on His behalf. That is why, everyone will answer for everything committed in this body and yes, every word weighed during that day.

What is new to me about the Lord’s Supper

What else amazed me?

The Church. I mean the wisdom that it took for the Church to allow people from their young ages, to receive the Lord’s Supper, and partake as a remembrance, I believe that ONLY God made it possible. It is important for every person, child or grown-up to understand this.

  • See, partaking of the Lord’s supper is saying YES, to the promise of waiting. When the groom goes back and builds the house, looking to come get the bride after.

Jesus was promising the same thing to all believers, from the disciples and yes, until that person that will believe, in Christ a minute before His coming.

At the age of 12, still a virgin, not having experienced much by then, still growing, saying Yes to the enthronement is the most powerful thing a young person can do.

The church should teach people and bring awareness to these kids rather than it being a religious activity. Yes, you might say they are kids then, but being taught to be faithful from a young age is important. In this age anyway, being open to a child is the only way to keep them alive. The world at this age is different.

What Does the Last Supper Remembrance Partaking Means

What is there to this promise?

  • You will not bow to other gods
  • You will wait for God in everything,
  • You will wait until that day Christ is revealed to you again, in His second coming or your death
  • Yes, you will keep yourself, mind, body and Spirit, renewed, holy and pure until that day of His coming
  • You will concentrate on the things of the Lord as Paul says for virgins and the Word for those the LORD has ordained
  • You will only focus on developing yourself
  • You will always live as someone in waiting, thus, bettering you

Partaking the cup means;

  • Developing and building up the relation with the Holy Spirit, to teach you about your LORD, King, and Saviour, Groom, Provider and yes (all the titles you can think of)
  • Tarry, wait the Holy Spirit will teach how and reveal Christ to you, as the Helper
  • On how to use the power given to you as a believer, as a co-heir, as the Child of God through Christ
  • Focus on how to live God on this earth, being the light and the salt, It would never be hard to live this life
  • Above all, it would have made us all be engaged in social and economic, activities and projects faithfully because these gifts are not our own, not to be used on ourselves and yes, must be used here
  • But being partnered with Christ and with the leadership of the Spirit, use them for many to come into the family
  • And even if you are to get married later, your earth partner will find you pure, a virgin and prepared
  • And together, as the Church, keep on Waiting for your King, Lord and Saviour.

Yes, help many, direct many and lead many to be able to partake of the promise and be present on that day of the Wedding (as the book of Revelation writes)

The Power of the Last Supper

Salvation. Understanding Christ and the Power of the Last Supper, the marriage proposal alone can help many in the confirmation or sacrament day, and begin a life that Christ has ordained for us all. A life changed.  Do you believe in a proposal so powerful? Do you believe in Christ? Are you in Christ? The LORD wants to be with you. Do you?

See, when Christ spoke to the disciples, they understood what it meant. And when they were promised the Helper and the Helper came, they knew how much time they had and just wanted to do what was ought to do caring less about this life but that to come, wanting to be with the Lord so bad even to death. I just love this.

The Holy Spirit is here for anyone who believes with the heart and confesses with their lips that Jesus is Lord. How simple is believing? It is saying yes to the marriage and being faithful to the promise walking faithfully with the Helper, according to His guidance and yes leadership, be ready for that day. Yes, whether it will come to you or when Christ comes to you on that day. Pure. Holy. Glorious. Powerful. Godly.

See, in addition to the Holy Spirit, we have the Name of the King. the name that is above all. The name that every spirit, knows and fears, and obeys and yes bow to, Jesus. Power over power. (Holy Spirit, teach me to know, learn and share about this next. AMEN). FAITH.

A stumbling block or the cornerstone. You choose and live Him.

This is a story of love. And you are the beloved of the One who made it all.
He is getting the home ready for us. The wedding ceremony is soon.
He is coming soon. And yes remember, UNANNOUNCED, like a thief at night.
Will He find us still pure and in waiting?
Surrender. Respond. Keep the Word.
Stay Faithful to the Vow.
Don’t you just love LOVE?
