Hey there! The Fiery Priest is getting ready for season two, and we thought it was the perfect time to give you our take on season one (though it’s been years). We’re going to dive deep into this awesome crime comedy-drama starring Kim Namgil, Lee Hanee, and Kim Sungkyun.
I’ve watched a few dramas by this legendary South Korean screenwriter, Park Jae Bum. The guy really knows how to mix crime, comedy, and team-led plots, and that’s something I really appreciate. Plus, he always goes for 20 episodes, and believe it or not, it works! You’d expect the story to drag on, but it doesn’t. Instead, we get to see character development and get used to the setting and plot.
So basically, there’s this ex-NIS agent turned priest named Kim Nam-gil who’s on a mission to bring the bad guys to justice after an elderly priest dies mysteriously. The journey to take down the gangsters and corrupt officials in the city is pretty funny, but things get complicated when the corrupt prosecutor, Lee Hanee, won’t cooperate.
Compared to Vincenzo, The Fiery Priest has a faster plot which I found more enjoyable. The story doesn’t waste time and you can easily root for the main character, the hotblooded priest Hae Il (played by Kim Namgil). Overall, the summary covers the main plot well and gives you everything you need to know before watching it.
The story doesn’t waste any time in introducing our main character, the fiery priest Hae Il (Kim Namgil), and I mean HOT-blooded! It’s so easy to get on board with him right from the start. The summary might not be lengthy, but it does an excellent job of outlining the drama’s main plot and what to expect.
Screenwriter Park Jae Bum is not afraid to tackle the big issues of corruption among the police, politicians, prosecution, and even the church itself, so buckle up! However, if this isn’t your cup of tea, don’t hold your breath for a change of heart because, boy oh boy, there are some downright insufferable characters in this show! But, hey, at least two out of the three main characters start off as villains, which makes for some pretty sweet character development as the story progresses.
But what I found unique is that two out of three main characters start off as villains, but their character development throughout the story is on point. Kim Namgil as Hae Il was simply amazing, he portrayed a morally ambiguous and traumatized character who is a total badass. His fight scenes were top-notch, and it was quite satisfying to see him take down all the bad guys one by one.
The story is pretty straightforward, but there are a bunch of plot twists that make it more interesting and thrilling. It flows really well and balances serious and funny moments perfectly. Like Vincenzo, it introduces a lot of characters and gradually builds a community that you’ll love.
The only downside was how the NIS plot was wrapped up so fast and those idiots didn’t get what they deserved. But overall, I loved every minute of The Fiery Priest and can’t wait for the second season and the trio’s reunion!
The sarcasm, the jokes, the irony, in the plot, I am up for the 20 coming episodes.
Interesting enough? I gave it a 9.5/10.
