Faith: How to be the trusting Lamb to the mighty Shepherd

This is more than about the lamb and the shepherd, it’s about life. Shepherds have played an indispensable role in societies throughout history, serving as caretakers and protectors of vulnerable lambs. Their role goes far beyond simply guiding flocks from one pasture to another; they are responsible for the welfare and well-being of each lamb under their care. The shepherd’s unwavering dedication to nurturing and protecting the vulnerable exemplifies the true essence of their role.

A lamb, as a young and innocent creature, is incredibly vulnerable. It lacks the experience and instincts of its adult counterparts, making it an easy target for predators and susceptible to various dangers in its environment. Without the guidance and protection of a strong and dedicated shepherd, a lamb may fall victim to these threats and face detrimental consequences like diseases and death.

Why lambs need a shepherd

One of the primary reasons why lambs are so vulnerable is their physical frailty. They are small, delicate, and easily overpowered by predators. Their small size makes them more difficult to defend themselves or escape from dangerous situations. Additionally, lambs have yet to develop the strength and agility necessary to navigate treacherous terrains or withstand harsh weather conditions. They rely heavily on the shepherd to ensure their safety and well-being.

Furthermore, lambs have limited knowledge and understanding of the world around them. They lack the experience to recognize and avoid potential dangers. For example, they may unknowingly wander too close to a cliff edge, walk into a body of water without realizing its depth, or venture into unfamiliar territories where they may encounter aggressive animals or hazardous terrain. A dedicated shepherd is crucial in providing guidance and preventing lambs from unintentionally putting themselves in harm’s way.

In addition to physical vulnerability, lambs are emotionally and psychologically dependent on the shepherd. They require constant reassurance and nurturing to thrive. Without the presence of a caring and attentive shepherd, lambs may experience anxiety, fear, and distress. A strong shepherd provides a sense of security and comfort, creating an environment where lambs can grow and develop without unnecessary stress.

Moreover, lambs are inexperienced in finding adequate sources of food and water. They rely on the shepherd’s knowledge and expertise to lead them to grazing areas and water sources that meet their nutritional needs. Neglecting these essential resources can result in malnutrition, stunted growth, and compromised health. A diligent shepherd ensures that lambs have access to the necessary nourishment to thrive and flourish.

A man like a lamb (sheep) needing a shepherd

And so like the lambs and as the creation of God we are new to this life. Whether you are a born-again Christian or you are just as you are, still learning to understand God’s love. It’s a miracle that we are breathing in this new day filled with endless love, mercies and grace and there are lots of experiences that come with it. This means we all need a shepherd who will guide us through this journey on earth as we experience and partake of the mission to keep and take care of the His creation. The creation was done so that we can experience and know of the beauty and goodness of God and above all learn and be assured that there is nothing that He can not do.

And as His children, we were created to shine that light on each other and every other creation that we are of God, from God and to God. And without the core energy and source which is God, who is connecting everything living and those we consider non-living, flowing within and through with His power and energy revealing His mighty power and presence to us we shall not live.

What we might not know about lambs and shepherds is this; lambs are fragile and Jesus comparing us to lambs shows that we can not depend on just our strength to live this life in this world. I have used the word just because I acknowledge there is free will and self which although drawn the power from the creator need to connect to the creator again for self-assurance. Not only do we trust God, but we trust that which He directs us and we obey to do as directed and led.

Man as a lamb

According to a certain writer, sheep (a lamb) have a strong instinct to follow a leader (strongly dependable on a shepherd) and without one, they are prone to danger as they are defenceless. Man like sheep, is a wonder in nature, and without a leader, he is likely to not only get lost spiritually but emotionally and physically engaging in issues that lead to the destruction of even life itself.

It is easy for a man to find and pick a ground to stand in. Someone to look up to or follow. Someone who can be a political leader, spiritual or just a role model. We find this easy because it is within us to need guidance, support and direction. With God, it is even more. You get a personal friend, a counsellor and a father. You decide who God is to you, and as He draws near you and you near Him, He becomes Who He Is to you (personally).

God as the Shepherd

And just like many positions people identified God and how He revealed Himself to different people within the Bible. He revealed Himself as Elohim ~Creator (Genesis 1:1), El-Elyon ~ Most High (Genesis 14: 20), Jehovah Jireh~Provider (Genesis 22:14), Jehovah Shamma ~The LORD is there (Ezekiel 48:35), Jehovah Nisi (Exodus 17:15), Saviour (1 Timothy 4:10), redeemer (Job 19:25), bread of life (John 6:35). Jehovah Tsidkenu – “LORD Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6), Abba ~ Father (Mark 14:36) Alpha and Omega ~The Begining and End (Isiah 44:6, Revelation 21:6).

The Shepherd from the Beginning

In addition, Immanuel Isaih 7:14), et cetera).  All these names are because of WHO God is and thus His Being. And this was why He revealed Himself to Moses to tell His Children and chosen people as I AM, WHO I AM (Exod 3:14). You need to believe He is for He is. While we may think of many reasons but the WORD gives us, FAITH. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrew 11:6)

We as lambs are not strong, capable or even aware of the dangers that are around us in the physical and spiritual realms. But just like Job, and just like Joseph and so like Lot we believe God has surrounded us. And with His protection and love, care and security, taking care of us even when we do not perceive the danger around us. And with everything going on around us that even when we don’t see it, we know He Is for us as according to Joshua 1:5, No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

A Final Word on the Shepherd and the Lamb

Just like a lamb are vulnerable creatures, both physically and emotionally, we must choose to put our focus and dependence on God our shepherd. We should rely on God for guidance, protection, and nurturing. He is a devoted shepherd who guides us through the challenges of our environment and helps us grow into healthy and resilient individuals. God’s role as the shepherd in safeguarding and nurturing us cannot be overstated.

Just as a shepherd leads his flock to safety, God leads us through life to the everlasting one. He provides us with everything we need, both physically and spiritually. He protects us from harm and guides us on the right path. When we are lost or confused, He shows us the way; when weak, He gives us strength. When we are afraid, He gives us courage.

God is our shepherd, and we are His sheep. He loves us unconditionally and will never abandon us. We can trust Him to take care of us, no matter what. So let us put our trust in God and follow Him wherever He leads us. And just like David, you and I will know that the Lord is our shepherd. And you (and I) as a lamb, experience His abounding love, grace and provisions wanting nothing.
